Looking up my Past

 I especially loved my friends and their allies.  WE took the big trip after Riyad’s graduation, and the next trips were our trip with the two younger kids from Amsterdam to Rome (a month). then a trip to Greece and Egypt.  We spent a week in Amsterdam then went to Brussels, Bruges and Ghent, then into Austria, Switzerland and then on a river cruise around the Rhine, then to Venice, Florence and Rome.  When we were flying out it was stormy and difficult, but we made the flight.  We also flew to New York and Washington, D.C. and then Williamsburg. We saw Bill’s sister Joan and Ramiza in New York, and then we on by train to Washington, D.C. then Williamsburg.  There we saw Peter, Paul and Mary that night.  We also too trips everywhere else that worked out for us.  The month long trip to Europe was amazing, and the Egypt and Greece trip was one of my favorite trips, especially with Egypt being so hospitable.  I still say Egypt is one of my favorite places to be:  the ruins were amazing, and the friends we made among our group of ten Americans was delightful.  We keep in touch with our two friends who now have almost grown children.  

What did the traveling do for us?  It forced us outside of the box, for one thing, and we could see different worlds and people.  We all want the same things, as it turns out.  We want peace, prosperity and kindliness.  We found people with Cousins in San Jose, with friends in our country, and with so many connections between us.

Looking up my Past

  My Mother’s mother was so busy that I never really Knew her well, but I do remember the farm and watching her kill chickens and that she never raised her voice.     She died of melanoma when I was twelve, and I remember her in the hospital and holding her hand.     That time with her was a great gift to me and I’ll always remember it. Looking up my Past

  I remember my father’s first mentor at Levi’s.     it was Milton Grenbaum, and he was a sweet guy.     We all saw him a couple of times a year.     He was so friendly and so kind.     We didn’t like going there, but we knew it was an obligation we could not shirk.   My father got a lot of information from Milton, and he never forgot his advice.  If we were there, we had to eat frogs’ legs or Snails or whatever was on the menu.  I hated it all, but I think Gary grew up to love all that stuff.  I knew we were beholden to him and his wife.  What made Dad so attractive to my friend?  They may have had a deep understanding of each other.  I know my mother never questioned it.  My father needed mentoring, and he learned at the knee of Mr. Grenbaum.  What I missed, not knowing him better?  I’ll never know, because he never told.  But it was Importan...

Looking up my Past

  I Remember a Time when I was scared of a lot of things.     My mother was usually alone, with my father working or traveling.     She was afraid of mice, afraid of thunder and lightning, afraid of dogs and cats and being alone.     My brother was like my dad, he didn’t fear stuff, but I did.     When we were in Virginia, I was afraid of storms, and mice and other Things.     My brother get would catch a mouse and take it outside, but really, the three of us were nervous and fearful.     Especially in Virginia, where we were usually alone, and we lived outside of town.     Whether we should have been, who knows?     But we were in a world where lots of animals, lots, of storms, lots of people were not close enough to help or aid us.   One time my brother had a mouse run over his chest, and that was when he was in High school.  Storms in Virginia knocked out the power, one time ruining th...
